The one rule that separates elegant from frumpy
A coat looks expensive when it fits precisely at the shoulder and skims everywhere else.
That’s it. That’s the whole thing.
Look at any coat that reads frumpy and you’ll find the shoulder seam sitting somewhere down the arm. It drops the entire silhouette and adds visual weight from the top down, and no amount of belting fixes it. Look at a coat that reads expensive and the seam sits exactly where your shoulder ends, with room to move underneath.
This matters more after 40, and not for any reason to do with age — it’s that we’re layering more. A coat that fits over a t-shirt and nothing else is useless in February. Length is a proportion decision, not a warmth decision. Mid-calf works. Above the knee works. The awkward zone is landing right at the widest part of the calf, which visually shortens the leg on almost everyone.

The trench
The most useful coat in the shoulder seasons, and the one most likely to still be in your closet in ten years.
A trench does something no other coat does — it reads polished without reading formal. One styling note worth knowing: belt it rather than buckling it. Tied at the back or knotted loosely at the front is softer, and it defines the waist without cinching it.

The teddy and sherpa coats
This is the category where frumpy lives, so the rules are stricter.
What makes a teddy coat look expensive: a defined shoulder, an actual collar rather than a shapeless round neckline, and a neutral with some warmth to it. Cream, chocolate and camel all work.

The elevated puffers
Nobody’s giving up a puffer in January, and nobody should. But there’s a real difference between a technical ski puffer and one designed to be worn with regular clothes.

For the days when full-length is too much — errands, driving, anything where you’re getting in and out of the car repeatedly.
