Let me tell you something nobody warned me about my 40s — my hair changed. Not dramatically, not overnight, but gradually and undeniably. The fine hair I had always managed suddenly felt thinner, less cooperative and honestly a little deflating to deal with. If you are in your 40s or navigating perimenopause you probably know exactly what I am talking about. Hair thinning is one of the most common and least discussed changes we go through and it affects everything from how we style our hair to what tools we reach for.
Which is exactly why I became obsessed with finding the right blowout brush.
A good round brush blowout can do things for fine thinning hair that products alone cannot — it adds volume, creates shine, smooths the cuticle and gives you that salon quality finish that makes your hair look and feel healthy. And in your 40s when your hair might need a little extra help? That matters more than ever.
I tested three different blowout brushes on my fine, thin, color treated blonde hair and I am giving you my completely honest verdict on all three. No sugarcoating. No paid opinions. Just a woman with medium to long fine hair who blow dries in sections starting at the bottom and working her way up — and genuinely cares about the results.
My Technique Before We Get Started
Before I get into the brushes I want to share my process because technique matters just as much as the tool. I always start with the IGK Good Behavior Heat Protectant on damp hair — this is non-negotiable for color treated hair and honestly for anyone who uses heat regularly. Then I divide my hair into sections starting at the bottom nape of the neck and working my way up to the top. This ensures every section gets proper attention and results in a much more polished finish than just going at it randomly.
Now — the brushes.
🥇 #1 ERGO Super Gentle Round Brush — My Favorite

ERGO Super Gentle Round Brush | Watch my video review
This one surprised me in the best possible way and I did not expect it to become my number one pick. The ERGO left my hair looking incredibly soft and shiny — genuinely one of the best hair days I have had in a while. It is not the brush that is going to give you massive volume but what it does give you is hair that looks incredibly healthy, glossy and polished.
What really won me over? It dried my entire head in just 8 minutes. For women with fine thin hair that is a significant win — less heat exposure time means less damage which means healthier hair over time. That is not a small thing.
The Super Gentle name is not marketing fluff either. It felt gentle on my hair throughout the entire blowout which for color treated hair that is already prone to breakage is exactly what I need.
Best for: Women who prioritize shine and hair health over maximum volume. Perfect for fine color treated hair.
Honest verdict: My everyday blowout brush. 🥇
🥈 #2 Wet Brush Volumizing Round Brush — Best for Volume

Wet Brush Volumizing Round Brush | Watch my video review
I want to be upfront about something — this brush has a high return rate on Amazon which made me skeptical going in. But I am going to be completely honest with you: it performed really well in my hair and I was genuinely impressed.
The larger barrel is the key difference here. More barrel surface area means more lift at the root which translates to more volume — and for fine thinning hair that is often exactly what we are chasing. I got noticeably more body and fullness with this brush compared to the others without using a single volumizing product. Just the brush, the heat protectant and my blow dryer.
The boar bristle blend also did a nice job detangling without causing breakage which is always a concern with fine hair. Lightweight and comfortable to hold throughout a full blowout.
Best for: Women who want maximum volume and body. Great option if your primary concern is fullness.
Honest verdict: Do not let the return rate scare you off — this one genuinely delivers on volume. 🥈
🥉 #3 Osensia Ceramic Round Brush — It Works But Not My Top Pick

Osensia Ceramic Round Brush | Watch my video review
I want to be really transparent here because I think honesty matters more than a perfectly curated recommendation. The Osensia is actually the brush I have made the most affiliate commission on — which means a lot of people are buying it based on my video. And I want to be clear: it is not a bad brush. It works. It dries hair efficiently and the ceramic barrel distributes heat evenly.
But compared to the other two it left my hair with a little more frizz and noticeably less shine. For fine thinning hair that is chasing that smooth polished look the finish just was not as impressive as the ERGO or even the Wet Brush.
If you have thicker or coarser hair the Osensia might perform better for you — ceramic barrels tend to work beautifully on hair types that need more frizz control and heat penetration. But for fine thin hair like mine the results were the most underwhelming of the three.
Best for: Thicker or coarser hair types that need more heat penetration and frizz control.
Honest verdict: It works but it would not be my first recommendation for fine thinning hair specifically. 🥉
The Final Ranking:

- ERGO Super Gentle Round Brush — linked here | watch review (best overall for fine hair)
- Wet Brush Volumizing Round Brush — linked here | watch review (best for volume)
- Osensia Ceramic Round Brush — linked here | watch review (works but not our top pick for fine hair)
- IGK Good Behavior Heat Protectant — linked here (use with all three!)
A note on hair in your 40s:
If you are in perimenopause or your early 40s and you have noticed your hair feeling thinner or less voluminous than it used to be — you are not imagining it and you are absolutely not alone. Hormonal changes during this season of life genuinely affect hair density and texture and it can feel really discouraging. The good news is that the right tools make a real difference. A quality round brush blowout adds volume, shine and that healthy appearance that our hair sometimes needs a little extra help achieving right now.
You deserve great hair days at every age. These brushes — especially the ERGO — helped me get there and I hope they do the same for you. 🖤
